Lebanon

Lebanon is facing one of the worst economic crises in over 150 years, now compounded by escalating attacks from Israel.

As the threat of war grows, HUMANITE is on the ground, working to support displaced families and prevent further devastation.

Status: Emergency
Today, thousands of Lebanese families are under attack amidst the Hezbollah-Israel fighting in Lebanon. Innocent Christian families, attacked and displaced. Innocent Muslim families, attacked and displaced. Innocent Arab families, attacked and displaced. As people struggle to access food, shelter, and transportation to safety, HUMANITE and our donors are responding.

Crisis Briefing

In 2022, Lebanon faces a devastating crisis, mirroring the ongoing struggles of our time. This multifaceted emergency, fueled by sectarianism, corruption, and external shocks, has left the country reeling. As we examine the profound challenges confronting Lebanon, it becomes evident that swift and impactful action is essential.

As the economic crisis has evolved, what is the current state of affairs?

The economic crisis in Lebanon has been worsening, leading to urgent humanitarian needs. The crisis, growing since 2019, has resulted in political instability, lack of key leadership, and severe impoverishment of the population. Basic services like education, health care, and electricity are in a dire state. Lebanon's GDP has plummeted by about 40 percent, the Lebanese pound has depreciated by nearly 90 percent, and inflation has surged.

Have these changes increased the risk of widespread violence?

The absence of political and economic change in Lebanon, even in the face of the worsening crisis, is indeed concerning. The complex political landscape, still dominated by leaders and warlords from the civil war era, makes real change hard. Understandably, the fear of instability and violence prevent people from pushing too hard for radical change, as memories of the last war loom large. Your donations help HUMANITE work at the Centre of these complexities with services, education, and support to stave off the violence and build into the peace our Lebanese neighbours here want and deserve.

How can donors best support the people of Lebanon survive this crisis and stave off any kind of return to war?

HUMANITE is working to support initiatives across Lebanon that focus on medical and economic support, education, and food security. Your monthly membership or one-time support will help HUMANITE work for the good of all members of our community here, including Palestinian and Syrian refugees, and encourage collaboration across religious and sectarian lines. War is not inevitable.

About HUMANITE

In 2003, the U.S. invaded Iraq. Within a few years, terrorism and war defined the Middle East.

Our founders were raised and came of age in the troubles of war—Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Syria. When two moved from America to help, the group formed, learning to love their neighbours on the frontlines of the world’s most notorious wars.

Today, 20 years after they first began, HUMANITE carries on that legacy, closing the gaps that lead to violence and building the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.
